If there’s one woman who knows a thing or two about daytime TV, it’s Oprah Winfrey! The Queen of daytime talk spoke out just hours after Kelly Ripa skipped Michael Strahan’s first show since announcing his shocking departure and she said it’s absolutely ridiculous that Kelly didn’t have a heads up.
Oprah has a lot to say about the drama going on between Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan. The longtime host of The Oprah Winfrey Show, spoke out at the premiere of her new show, Greenleaf on April 20 and said that “nobody should ever be blindsided” like Kelly was in finding out about Michael leaving the show to join GMA. Kelly called out “sick” the day after Michael’s big announcement and then reportedly left for a “planned” trip to Turks & Caicos with her husband, Mark Consuelos.
“Nobody should ever be blindsided,” Oprah said. “I don’t know who’s in charge, but somebody should’ve said, ‘This is gonna happen.’ You shouldn’t have to read it in the paper. Ever. I had a co-host for a long time and I wanted to do it by myself.” But Oprah had some kind words to say about Michael: “He’s going to be great on Good Morning America. I think Michael’s so great. He’s like a natural talent. He won’t get any sleep, but he will be great.” Kelly reportedly found out about Michael’s big exit plan on April 19, just minutes before the new broke to the entire world. HollywoodLife.com told you that Kelly is “livid” and “devastated” that Michael and Disney/ABC’s President, Ben Sherwood, kept her out of the loop while they hammered out Michael’s new deal.
Kelly reportedly had her trip with Mark planned for their 20th wedding anniversary and doesn’t plan to be back for five to six days. “It’s fortuitous that she had this trip planned with her husband and it wouldn’t be surprising if it started early,” a source tells People. “She’s being very mature about this and choosing not to talk a lot and to wait and see how this plays out,” says the source, who adds that she feels “blindsided” by not being given a heads up about Strahan’s departure. She’s dedicated everything to the program, it was the primary focus in her career, she has been dedicated to maintaining the show for both the staff and viewers – and then all of a sudden the entire program is changed without them being decent enough to give her any notice.”
Michael made sure to release yet another statement following his big news, where he specifically thanked Kelly and the show’s longtime producer, Michael Gelman. “This is my second family here,” the 44-year-old added. “I’m going to miss everybody at ‘Live,’ sitting next to Kelly every day. I’ve been having a lot of fun on that show over the last four years and I’m very thankful to her because I’ve learned so much from her and [executive producer] Michael Gelman. I was so new to all of this that if it weren’t for her and for Michael Gelman and the staff there … they really boosted me up to make me look a lot better than I really am.”
HollywoodLifers, do you think it was wrong for Kelly to be blindsided?
