Hulk Hogan was absolutely devastated upon waking up on April 21 and learning that his longtime friend and colleague, Chyna, was found dead at just 45 years old the night before. To honor her memory, Hulk took to Twitter to share a touching statement — read it here.
“Devastating over Chyna passing,” he wrote. “She dated Brutus years before wrestling, such a beautiful soul and so kind to my children, rip Joanie love u.”
As of now Chyna’s unexpected cause of death is still unknown, and few details have been released. “It is with deep sadness to inform you today that we lost a true icon, a real life superhero,” a statement on her Twitter reads. “She will live forever in the memories of her millions of fans and all of us that loved her.”
“WWE is saddened to learn of reports that Joanie Laurer, best known for competing in WWE as Chyna, has passed away,” the wrestling organization said in a statement. “A physically striking and wildly talented performer, Chyna was a true sports-entertainment pioneer. Not only did the Superstar dubbed ‘The Ninth Wonder of the World’ help found the groundbreaking faction D-Generation X, but she also holds the distinction of being the first and only female to win the Intercontinental Championship. WWE extends its condolences to Laurer’s family, friends and fans.”
Besides a successful career in wrestling, Chyna has also posed for Playboy and starred in VH1’s 2005 show, The Surreal Live. More recently, she spent time in Japan to teach English, and lived her last few years away from the spotlight.
