Harriet Tubman is about to take over the $20 bill! The Civil War hero who helped slaves escape the South during the war will replace controversial president Andrew Jackson to become the new face of the $20 bill, Treasury Secretary Jack Lew announced on April 20. If you aren’t too familiar with who Harriet is or her impact on the Civil War, time for a little history lesson!
1. Her nickname was Moses.
Harriet was given the nickname by fellow abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison, who deemed her “Moses of Her People” because of her success in helping slaves to freedom the way Moses the prophet did with Hebrews in the Book of Exodus. Coincidentally, she had a brother named Moses too!
2. She’s was one of the Underground Railroad’s most successful workers.
During her time working on the secret slave-freeing network, Harriet made 13 trips to the South. She was able to lead more than 70 people to freedom in northern free states and Canada!
3. She was the first woman to lead an armed expedition in the war.
Along with her heroic efforts freeing slaves, Harriet was also an armed scout. She led more than 700 slaves to freedom when she guided the raid at Combahee Ferry in June 1863!
4. Harriet was also an advocate for women’s rights.
As if saving hundreds of slaves isn’t amazing enough, Harriet also fought for women’s suffrage in her later years of life. Working alongside women like Susan B. Anthony and Emily Howland, Harriet traveled to several cities to speak out in favor of women’s rights.
5. She was also a spy, a nurse, and a cook.
In addition to her heroic efforts freeing slaves, Harriet helped people in several other ways during the Civil War. She served as a cook and a nurse in the Union Army, aiding to men with smallpox and using herbs to naturally help heal them. Could she be any more amazing?
