‘Love It Or List It’: NC Homeowners Suing Show For ‘Disastrous Work’ Done On Home

Love it or lawsuit? Homeowners who received renovations from the HGTV show 'Love It Or List It' are suing the show for doing some 'disastrous work' on their home. Get the details right here! Yikes, HGTV is in some hot water! A North Carolina couple are suing the producer of the hit show Love It Or List It after they were featured on an episode that resulted in some terrible renovations. One year after Deena Murphy and Timothy Sullivan received work on their home in an April 2015 episode of LIOLI, the renovations have proved to create even more problems than before!

Because the work that was done on their home only resulted in additional issues, Deena and Timothy are seeking compensation with this lawsuit. Rather than suing the cohosts, Hilary Farr and David Visentin, or the show’s network, Timothy and Deena filed the lawsuit against Big Coat TV (the Canadian-based company that produces LIOLI), and Aaron Fitz Construction, the North Carolina contractor the show hired to actually do the renovations. But their bad renovations aren’t the only thing that Deena and Timothy weren’t pleased with — apparently the hosts and the people who work on the show are a bunch of frauds!

“The show is scripted, with ‘roles’ and reactions assigned to the various performers and participants, including the homeowners,” the lawsuit states, according to The News & Observer of Raleigh. “These characters are actors or television personalities playing a role for the camera, and in this case none of them played more than a casual role in the actual renovation process.”

As if a problematic renovation isn’t bad enough, Deena and Timothy claim that they were totally gypped, too! Before the improvements began, the couple supposedly handed over $140,000 for the project, but the production company only gave Aaron Fitz Construction $85,786.50 to work with. That’s a whole $54k gone with no explanation!

On top of the poor job done on their home, Timothy and Deena are also contending that they suffered from a breach of contract, unfair trade practices which violate North Carolina’s general contractor laws, and a “bizarre” business model that creates an “inherent conflict of interest” because Big Coat production company makes most of its money on TV advertising.

With things still in progress, it’s yet to be determined who will come out on top in this lawsuit. But Maria Armstrong, CEO and executive producer of Big Coat Productions/Big Coat TV, did issue a statement saying that they are very aware of Deena and Timothy’s unhappiness, and that the production company plans to fight to the finish.

“Because this matter involves ongoing litigation, our attorneys have advised us and we feel that making a comment would be inappropriate at this time,” Maria said in the statement. “However, we do intend to vigorously defend what we consider to be false allegations.”
