It’s that time of year — time to file your taxes with the IRS! But even though it’s officially Tax Day on April 15, in 2016, you’ll get an extra few days to get everything sent in. Find out why, PLUS everything else you need to know, here!
If you’re rushing to get your taxes in by the end of the day, take a deep breath. It turns out, this year you actually have until April 18 to file your report with the IRS! But why the three extra days? We’re filling you in on that and more about Tax Day here!
Taxes are usually due by April 15, but this year the April 16 holiday, Emancipation Day, a legal holiday in Washington, D.C., falls on a Saturday, so federal offices are closed on the Friday before — meaning the IRS is off the job on April 15 (Emancipation Day celebrates the signing of the Emancipation Act by President Lincoln).
The offices are obviously closed over the weekend, too, meaning you’ll have until Monday, April 18, to get everything in and still be on time. And if you’re in Maine or Massachusetts, you’ll have until the 19th, because those states celebrate Patriots Day on the 18th.
If you think you still need more time, though, don’t worry — you can file for a six-month extension. Just head over to the Free File Link on the IRS website and apply by April 18 and you’ll have until October to get things squared away!
