Donald Trump is causing drama once again, without even doing anything himself! A Tulane University fraternity built a ‘Trump Wall’ outside of their house that now has them in some hot water with their campus. Get the details here!
Making America great again may come with some major backlash! Donald Trump‘s campaign slogan was plastered all over a “Trump Wall” that the men of Kappa Alpha Order fraternity at Tulane University put up outside of their off-campus house on April 7, and it was not exactly appreciated by their fellow students. The KA members were immediately shamed for being super ignorant!
Using a bunch of sandbags to create their “Trump Wall,” the fraternity topped off the barrier by spray painting it with “Trump” and his slogan, “Make America Great Again.” Building a wall is part of KA tradition, as they erect a wall every spring to celebrate the fraternity’s annual “Old South” formal ball. But while some the guys said that this year’s Trump theme was simply for satire, according to The Times-Picayune, those not involved didn’t find it very funny.
Rather than laughing at the “Trump Wall,” some students saw the sandbag wall as extremely offensive, suggesting that it was filled with negative connotations of Latino and Mexican immigrants — whom Donald have offended with several remarks during his presidential campaign. One student, Ana De Santiago, took to Facebook to express her frustration, as part of Tulane’s Latino group GENTE’s petition against KA and their “Trump Wall.”
“It was a wall filled with connotations of hate and ignorance. These connotations most directly mocked the experiences of Latino immigrants and workers throughout our nation,” she wrote on April 12. “By writing Trump in large, red letters across the ‘wall,’ KA changed what was a tradition of building a wall into a tradition of constructing a border, symbolizing separation and xenophobia. This issue not only affects Latinos but all other marginalized immigrant groups in this country.”
As mentioned in Ana’s post, Trump has referred to Mexico’s people as rapists, accusing them of bringing crime and drugs into the United States when they cross the border. He has also promised that he would build a “great wall” on the Mexican-American border to keep immigrants out if he is elected as president — which makes the “Trump Wall” even more touchy.
The wall has since been taken down after all of the controversy it caused, and the Kappa Alpha members are working with Tulane’s Greek life department to address the incident. Whether they’ll be punished for the “Trump Wall” is still unclear, but we’d certainly think they’ve learned their lesson to not do something like this again!
