‘American Idol’ runner-up La’Porsha Renae is under major fire for comments she recently made about the LGBT community. After referring to it as a ‘lifestyle,’ La’Porsha has been faced with lots of backlash on social media. See some of the angry tweets right here.
La’Porsha Renae made some remarks on April 8 that are now getting her in hot water with the LGBT community. When reporters asked the 22-year-old American Idol runner-up about her home state of Mississippi and her thoughts on its new “anti-LGBT” bill, La’Porscha suggested that she doesn’t agree with the LGBT “lifestyle” — and that immediately sparked a furious debate on Twitter!
After La’Porsha revealed that she would be leaving Mississppi in her post-Idol days, she then began to elaborate her thoughts on the “Religious Liberty” bill 1523, which allows for LGBT people to be denied service from businesses, individuals, and religiously affiliated organizations. “They are people just like us,” she said. “They’re people with feelings. Although all of us may not agree with that particular lifestyle for religious reasons, whatever the reason is, you still treat each other with respect…I am one of the people who don’t really agree with that lifestyle. I wasn’t brought up that way. It wasn’t how I was raised.”
Although La’Porsha quickly added that she has many friends in the LGBT community that she loves dearly, it was her phrasing that set social media users off. And after she took to Twitter herself to defend her comments, writing, “We don’t have to agree with each other’s life choices to love/respect one another,” she sparked another flood of furious tweets.

.@LaporshaRenae Being gay isn't a lifestyle; it's part of who someone is. Using the word lifestyle implies it's a choice — which it isn't.

.@laporsharenae glad you're leaving Mississippi. One less close minded person holding my home state back. Too bad–I was a fan.

@laporsharenae disagree and dislike your tweet and your beliefs. Good luck.

@laporsharenae being gay is not a life choice, nor lifestyle. It's who you are. Please educate yourself. Your statements are disappointing.

. @laporsharenae There is a difference between having an "opinion" and being a bigot.

@laporsharenae You need to stop using the term “life choice”. It’s disrespectful to the LGBT community. It’s not a choice.

Once a debate sparked between angry tweeters and La’Porsha’s fans, the singer wanted to make one thing clear: She wasn’t trying to hurt anyone with what she said. In a Periscope video chat on April 10, La’Porscha apologized for offending the LGBT community with her comments.
“I tried to be as open and honest and neutral as possible, but that’s the way interviews go. Sometimes when you do interviews, it gets twisted up,” she said. “I can understand when I read it back why people were offended, and for that I deeply apologize. I wasn’t trying to offend anyone. I was just trying to honestly answer a question that caught me off guard. It was supposed to be an interview about singing, and it became political and I’m not a political person at all.”
La’Porsha stressed in another post-show interview with Billboard that she hopes to be an “artist of truth.” Now that she is officially signed with Big Machine/Motown Records, we’re thinking LaPorsha might take this little controversy as a learning experience for just how truthful she is to the media!
