The biggest show on TV is back! ‘Outlander’ returns April 9, and HollywoodLife.com talked EXCLUSIVELY to Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan about Jamie and Claire’s relationship in season two. Paris may be beautiful, but it proves ‘dangerous’ for Jamie and Claire!
Jamie and Claire Fraser are undoubtedly the hottest couple on television. However, their marriage will struggle in Outlander season two, stars Caitriona Balfe, 36, and Sam Heughan, 35, told HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY at the Outlander window display unveiling at Saks Fifth Avenue on April 7. Plus, they tease “surprises” when it comes to changes concerning the book and TV show!
What struggles will Jamie and Claire be facing in season two?
CAITRIONA BALFE: Obviously, Jamie is still reeling from the trauma of the end of season one, so that’s had a huge affect on their marriage. He’s kind of going through his own personal hell, and Claire is trying to be empathetic and trying to understand and keep his mind occupied. But that comes at a price for her. She feels quite lonely and feels very estranged from him in a lot of ways.
SAM HEUGHAN: They’re in Paris for a reason, but it’s a dangerous place for them, a poisonous place that begins to impact their relationship.
How will season two be different from season one?
CAITRIONA: It’s very different. The story takes on a whole new journey. The first half of the season we’re obviously in a different country with different social codes. Visually, it’s very different. Season one, we saw a couple fall in love and it was very passionate. In season two, they’re not only trying to change the course of history, their relationship is much more complex.
Are there any big changes from the book to the show?
CAITRIONA: There are some. We’ve all seen the trailer — in the beginning that Claire does go back to Frank. So that’s different. We played a little bit with the timeline. But what I thought was a really bold storytelling move — we’re almost showing the end of the season at the very beginning and we have no idea how the couple gets there. So that’s going to be the whole story that you’re going to see.
SAM: We do make the show for the fans of the book, but there will be surprises in there for sure.
