Gwen Stefani may be happier than ever now, but before Blake Shelton, that wasn’t the case. In an interview with Good Morning America, Gwen revealed that she was focused on ‘trying not to die’ after her devastating divorce from Gavin Rossdale. Watch what she said here!
Divorce wasn’t just heartbreaking for Gwen Stefani, it was nearly fatal. When the 46-year-old singer discussed her split from Gavin Rossdale on GMA, she admitted that it took away her motivation to make new music — but even worse, it also practically took away her desire to live.
“I was put in the studio by my label, I didnt care about anything, I was just literally trying to get up in the morning,” she told the GMA anchors. “I got there and said I just wanna write a record, I don’t care about anything but getting this out and healing and being honest and real and truthful. I dont care what style it is or being on the radio or charts or anything — why would that matter to me at this point? Nothing matters except for just trying not to die right now.”
Poor Gwen! She has been fairly open about the devastation she faced following her split from Gavin, but this may be her most serious confession yet. Between Gavin’s affair with their nanny, Mindy Mann, and breaking up her family of five, there was a lot for Gwen to process during the divorce…and according to what she told GMA, that sent Gwen to the lowest place she has ever been.
Luckily for Gwen, she began filming for The Voice right in the middle of the divorce and quickly found a confidant in Blake Shelton. In fact, Gwen admitted in another interview that her now-boyfriend “saved” her during the “unexpected horribleness” of her split! Aww!
Thanks to Blake’s companionship and love, Gwen went from “trying not to die” to putting together her most vulnerable and open-book record yet, This Is What The Truth Feels Like. And instead of focusing on her dark times in the album’s songs, Gwen turned her heartbreak into some stick-it-to-the-man lyrics! (Just listen to “Used To Love You” and “Me Without You” and you’ll understand what we’re talking about!)
Although Gwen admitted that it’s still painful to think about her divorce and having her family break up, she said her music was her saving grace — along with Blake, of course. We hate thinking that Gwen ever went through such terrible pain, but we totally commend her for making one heck of a comeback!
