What a touching moment. Before presenting the award for Album of the Year at the ACMs on April 3, Darius Rucker and Martina McBride took a moment to honor the late Joey Feek, and the crowd went wild in her memory. See the sweet moment here.
Joey Feek sadly didn’t live long enough to make it to this year’s Academy of Country Music Awards, but her memory certainly lived on during the show. Martina McBride and Darius Rucker beautifully celebrated the late singer’s life at the show with help from the audience in a touching tribute that had everyone on their feet. So sweet.
Martina and Darius were presenting the award for Vocal Group of the Year when they took a second to mention Joey and the impact she had on country music before her untimely passing on March 4. The singers both got teary-eyed as they talked about Joey’s life while a montage of photos played in the background and it was such an incredibly touching moment. They pointed out that what Joey would want most is that the room just give her a round of applause, and that’s exactly what the crowd did — everyone was on their feet and it was so sweet.
Joey sadly died from cervical cancer last month after a hard-fought battle with her husband and bandmate, Rory Feek, by her side. Some of her family members were in the audience, and we’re so glad they were able to be part of this incredible moment in celebration of her too-short, but well-lived, life.
Rory has been raising his and Joey’s two-year-old daughter, Indiana, alone since Joey’s death, and recently made a heartbreaking confession about life without mom: Indy is just so young, she doesn’t even realize Joey is gone, and hasn’t asked for her once since she passed. These two have been so strong during this difficult time, and we know they both probably loved seeing the Academy of Country Music pay tribute to Joey in such a fine way.
