With all the bad blood between lead singer Axl Rose, 54, and guitarist Slash, 50, we never thought we’d see the day that they’d be back on stage performing as Guns N’ Roses. But the rockers are back and reunion is so major that they are the Saturday Night headliners April 16 and 23 at the Coachella Music Festival, before hitting the road for a 21 city tour! So in advance of their shows, let’s get to know more about the iconic band.
With GNR finally back together and performing again after all these years, let’s take a look at five fun facts about the band.
1. Guns N’ Roses got their name from a combination of two other L.A. bands monikers.
in 1984 Axl was the lead singer of a band called Hollywood Rose when another band called L.A. guns needed a vocalist. He and guitarist Izzy Stradlin, 53 joined L.A. Guns members to create Guns N’ Roses, even though most of the members from L.A. Guns were later replaced.
2. Guns N’ Roses can thank MTV for their big breakthrough.
The band’s debut album Appetite for Destruction came out in 1987 with it’s first single “Welcome to the Jungle” not going anywhere. After nearly a year, MTV finally started playing the video for the song after hours and it completely blew up, with its refreshingly different rock sound and Axl’s sexy on-screen moves and presence.
3. GNR’s Appetite for Destruction is the best selling debut album by a band ever.
Their debut album has album has sold over 18 million copies in the U.S., making it the best-selling debut of all time in the States. Globally, its sold more than 30 million copies worldwide.
4. Guns N’ Roses played their final concert as a band in 1993.
When the band finished their 28 month Use Your Illusion tour in 1993, it would turn out to have been their final live performances. They would go on to have such internal turmoil and infighting that Slash left the band and by the late 1990’s it was only Axl left in the group as still had the rights to the band’s name..
5. They’ll be playing their first major concert in 23 years April 16 at Coachella.
The band will be introducing their music to a whole new generation as they have nabbed the headlining position for the Saturday night shows at the annual music and arts festival, a very prestigious way to make a comeback!
