Why the heck didn’t Stabler and Benson get together during their 12 seasons on ‘Law & Order: SVU?’ Well, now Christopher Meloni, who left the show in 2011, is telling all.
They pretty much broke the internet earlier this week when the epic Detective Elliot Stabler and Olivia Benson reunited for a selfie, but why was it never a romantic relationship? Christopher Meloni is the guest on this week’s Inside the Actor’s Studio, and he finally talks about his working relationship with Mariska Hargitay.
Did the producers want there to be something more with Benson and Stabler? Well, they were aware of the tension, Chris explained, but that was the point.
“That, I think they always knew would be the death knell of that relationship,” Chris said in a bonus clip of Inside the Actors Studio. “I think they needed to keep that line taut and very clear…Keep the tension, never cross it.”
He also continued by saying that Mariska was just so easy to work with, and off camera, they were always cracking up together “busting chops.”
“She was always ready for anything new…There was always an unspoken shorthand to what we were doing. That makes it just so much easier, and off camera as well,” he said. “There’s a lot to be said for that when you’re working with someone for 16 hours a day, you better get along when the cameras aren’t rolling as well as when it is. That was priceless, I think for both of us.”
Christopher’s episode of Inside the Actors Studio airs on Thursday, March 31 at 8 p.m. on Bravo!
