Um, TMI? Anderson Cooper and his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt, wrote a book together. While talking about ‘The Rainbow Comes And Goes,’ Gloria just casually mentioned her past lesbian relationship, something Anderson didn’t even know about! Click to watch his reaction.
You know, there’s a time and a place for a mother to tell her son about her secret, teenage lesbian past. It’s usually not in the middle of a public interview. Unfortunately for Anderson Cooper, 48, his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt, 92, decided to randomly spill those beans while discussing the book they wrote together! Whoops.
“I myself, when I went to Farmington, I went through a brief so-called lesbian relationship with a girl in school,” Gloria said while she and Anderson spoke with PEOPLE magazine’s Jess Cagle, 50. They were talking about The Rainbow Comes and Goes, a collection of intimate correspondence between them when Gloria casually revealed she once had a girlfriend!
It seems Gloria’s crush wasn’t something she wrote to Anderson about, as he looked particularly surprised to hear about it. “This is news to me. You didn’t mention this in the book, Mom.” Yeah, Gloria. That’s kind of an important detail.
“Cynthia, her name was, and she came once to visit my aunt in New York on holiday,” Gloria said, revealing that she was just 13-years-old during this romance. “We had this sort of lesbian relationship and it felt so great, you know. It felt so good and yet I thought, ‘There’s something about this.’…I thought, ‘No, this is something that’s not really what I want.’ It was very brief.” It seems Gloria was just like Miley Cyrus, 23, long before Miley was even born!
Well, while Gloria’s fluid same-sex romance was brief, Anderson has always been proudly gay. “I…always have been, always will be and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself and proud,” he famously said during an interview with The Daily Beast in 2012.
While this bombshell from Gloria is surprising, it’s far better than the bombs Donald Trump, 69, was throwing during his interview on Anderson Cooper 360 in July 2015. Right after Trump announced he was running for president, he got into a fight with Anderson over polling numbers, saying that the CNN anchor was an example of why “people don’t trust the media.” When given a choice between Gloria going TMI during an interview or listening to Donald Trump rant on, Anderson’s choice is clear.
What do you think about Gloria just dropping the news of her lesbian affair like that, HollywoodLifers?
