We did NOT see this one coming! Simon Cowell has FINALLY spoke out about One Direction’s spontaneous break — but he didn’t say what we were expecting. It turns out, not even the man who created 1D knows what’s in store for the band in the near future. Talk about a plot twist!
Should we be freaking out? Simon Cowell, 56, has finally spoken on One Direction‘s temporary split, BUT he couldn’t offer us any hope that the band will reunite soon. In fact, in a new cover interview with Billboard magazine, the music mogul and former X Factor judge admitted he doesn’t even know if the group will EVER get back together! Way to dash our dreams, Simon.
“I don’t know if it’s a hiatus or a breakup, to be honest,” Simon revealed during his interview. “In a weird way, I don’t want to know. I don’t think they’ve had enough time to experience what it’s like not being in the group to really answer that.” Is anyone else heartbroken by this news? But as confusing — and potentially devastating — as Simon’s words are, they also totally make sense. One Direction has been on a break for LESS than a year, so we think it’s pretty fair that Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles, Liam Payne, and Niall Horan need more time to develop independently and think their next move through.
It’s also no surprise that the music industry can be extremely unpredictable. After all, when Zayn Malik, 23, left One Direction in March 2015, it was a shock to many. And it was Zayn’s leaving that acted as a catalyst for the others wanting some distance as well.
“Whenever I was with them, we talked about it, and I couldn’t argue with them,” Simon revealed about the remaining four members contemplating a break back in 2015. “They had achieved so much in a short period of time, and I didn’t want them to get jaded. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned to trust people more, particularly artists. They’ll decide when they want to come back together.”
But if we take pop’s history into consideration, this certainly appears to be a gentle, drawn-out split that will eventually lead to a breakup. Even Simon admitted that Harry has already begun exploring solo career options. “He’ll work out what kind of record he wants to make because he’s got great taste — which is always a help,” Simon divulged. “All the writers and producers want to work with him, understandably, but he probably won’t rush into it.” See what we mean? It seems as if a breakup MAY be inevitable.
But after all, who are we to predict the future? If Simon himself can’t even say what the boys will decide, it’s really anybody’s guess.
Are you shocked by Simon’s words, HollywoodLifers? Do YOU think 1D is breaking up for good?
