This totally came out of nowhere and we’re completely devastated over it. Nobody expected the news of Garry Shandling’s death on March 24, and it reportedly happened so suddenly, shocking his loved ones. Find out his alleged cause of death here.
Garry died of a “massive heart attack, with no prior warning whatsoever,” falling unconscious after making the 911 call, according to TMZ He was just 66 years old when he died, and it was especially shocking since he was reportedly alive, talking and well just hours earlier.
To put the suddenness of this into perspective, take into account that Garry was out and about with Kathy Griffin and Bob Odenkirk just last weekend on March 20, so this sad news was really unexpected. Our hearts go out to his family and loved ones during what must be such a difficult time.
Garry certainly leaves behind quite a legacy, though. After years of performing standup, Showtime green-lit his comedy series, It’s Garry Shandling’s Show, and the program went on to win four Emmy Awards. When 1992 hit, though, he found even greater success with his HBO series The Larry Sanders Show, and was even offered Dave Letterman’s spot on The Late Late Show, which he ultimately turned down.
The Larry Sanders Show had 89 episodes, 56 Emmy nominations and 3 Emmy wins, so Garry clearly leaves behind a career and legacy he can always be proud of. Since the series ended, he’s starred in several movies, but for the most part, has remained fairly private and under the radar. We’ll be watching some Larry Sanders in his honor today, though.
