‘Dancing With The Stars’ is back! See who cha-cha’d and tango’d their way into our hearts on the first episode of the new season below!
Sadly, this season we will miss pro Derek Hough and his sister, former dancer and judge Julianne Hough. However, Len Goodman is back, and joined by Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli at the judges table!
Actress and Real Housewife Kim Fields, 46, danced with Sasha Farber. They kicked off the night with the Cha Cha. Len liked the timing but said she needs to work her hips more. Bruno called her “saucy!” Carrie Ann said she was fierce and a firecracker. They got a 20 out of 30!
Professional UFC fighter Paige VanZant, 21, danced the Foxtrot with two time champ Mark Ballas. It was amazing! She is definitely going far in this competition — I especially loved her facial expressions! Bruno said she has “wonderful, natural lines” but needs to work on her timing and control. “Great potential,” Bruno added. Carrie Ann said she was fearless. Len liked the musicality and said it was “terrific.” They got a 21 out of 30!
Football legend Doug Flutie, 53, danced the Foxtrot with Karina Smirnoff. Aww, he definitely tried hard but didn’t have the best rhythm. “The good news is you did it. I love your sense of commitment,” Carrie Ann said, and added “people love an underdog.” Len said it had “sparkle and bling.” Bruno advised to work on the frame and timing….so…. everything. They got a 15 out of 30.
Next, Fuller House actress Jodie Sweetin, 34, danced the Tango with Keo Motsepe to Demi Lovato‘s “Confident.” Len said: “It had spirit, it had attack.” Bruno called her “alluring,” and said it was a strong performance. Carrie Ann said it was “very impressive.” Carrie Ann also mentioned her awkward facial expression, which was a little distracting. They got a 20!
‘Dancing With The Stars’ Premiere — Season 22 Recap
Geraldo Rivera, 72, danced the Cha Cha with Edyta Sliwinska because he said “I’m the only Puerto Rican in America who can’t dance.” The oldest in the competition (by far), he gave it his all! Bruno teased him: “Maybe you can dance next week!” Carrie Ann said he has great charisma but she needs more hip action! Len said his dancing is “a work in progress.” They got a 13. Ouch!
Donald Trump‘s ex wife Marla Maples, 52, danced a Quickstep with Tony Dovolani. “That was fun! You are elegant, you have incredible grace! I can’t wait to see you next week,” Carrie Ann said. Len said it was terrific and full of fanfare. “Forget about the Donald, the ballroom is your trump card,” Bruno said! They got a 21 out of 30!
Boyz II Men member Wanya Morris, 42, danced the Cha Cha with Lindsay Arnold to Boyz II Men’s first big hit “Motownphilly.” It was AMAZING! My favorite dance of the night, for sure! “There was more packed into that than Bruno’s makeup bag,” Len said, adding he could make it to the end! Bruno said his timing was perfect and easy. “Delicious!” Carrie Ann started dancing like a maniac and said “you are a total twinkle toe in the making!” They got a 23, including two 8’s! Highest score of the night!
Ginger Zee, 35, danced the Jive with Val Chmerkovskiy. Bruno said she delivered under pressure: “It was sharp and precise.” Carrie Ann said she is “phenomenal” and that her dancing reminded her of Bindi Irwin — “pure joy!” Len said it was “frisky, risky, fast and furious.” Wow, amazing comments! They got a 23, and tied for the highest score of the night!
O.C. darling Mischa Barton, 30, danced the Tango with Artem Chigvintsev. Yikes…it was so awkward! “I’m so relieved,” she said after the dance. Carrie Ann said she respects her courage and compared her to Doug — not a natural dancer. “That wasn’t a dance, that was walking. Not enough Tango!,” Len said. Bruno said she needs more spunk and she needs to extend more to reach everyone in the audience and at home. She looked near tears during the judging! They got a 16! At least she looked pretty during the dance — she relied on on-demand beauty app beGlammed for her dress rehearsal makeup.
Deaf model Nyle DiMarco, 26, danced the Cha Cha with Peta Murgatroyd. They’ve already had a bit of the DWTS injury curse — he needed stitches in his forehead after Peta elbowed him in rehearsal! But that didn’t stop them AT ALL — the dance was nearly flawless. Through a translator, Nyle said he can’t hear the music at all, but just follows Peta to get the timing right. “It got better and better, well done,” Len said. “Are you for real? I’m sorry, I have to touch you in case you are a fantasy! He’s real! You could be America’s Next Top Dancer!” Bruno said. “First I was like, hot! Then, I was like, wow! You brought the rhythm to life! Peta, there is an incredible partnership here. This is a beautiful team to watch.” They were SO good — I think they may win the whole thing!
Antonio Brown, 27, danced the Quickstep with Sharna Burgess. “You’ve got so much talent but you have to channel it correctly. The amount of talent you have is out of this world,” Bruno said. “You are a beast! There is something fantastic. You’re magic! I am loving this season,” Carrie Ann said. Len said he did well for a difficult dance. They got a 21 — a 6, 7, and 8!
Finally, the MVP of Super Bowl 50 Von Miller, 26, danced the Foxtrot with Witney Carson, who is about half his size! “You’re soft and silky,” Carrie Ann said. Len liked that they kept it proper and did a lot of the dance in hold. “You’ve got the moves! You have bucketloads of charisma and presence!” Bruno said. They got a 21, including a 6, 7, and 8!
