This is so sad! The patriarch of the ‘Gold Rush’ family passed away on Mar. 18. Luckily, the 96-year-old passed away peacefully in his sleep surrounded by his family in his home in Alaska. We have all of the details on the devastating loss, right here.
Awww, we’re going to miss the “legendary” Gold Rush star John Schnabel, who passed away on Mar. 18. The Alaskan miner was 96 years old when he died, and family says he passed peacefully in his sleep in his home in Alaska. Here’s what we know so far.
This is heartbreaking! We loved watching John on Discovery’s Gold Rush, and though he lived a long, happy, successful life, we’ll certainly miss him on the show now that he’s gone. John’s family confirmed his death to People on Mar. 18, saying “We couldn’t have asked for a better father, grandfather and overall family man. He was a true legend and we appreciate all of your love and support as we celebrate his wonderful life.”
The military veteran underwent a triple bypass almost 30 years ago, and bought his mine when his doctor suggested he remain active. Gold Nugget Mine in Porcupine Creek, Alaska became the home of his family, and he recently handed the operation over to his 16-year-old son Parker. Parker is now the center of Gold Rush, but John was a staple on the show up until his death.
To honor John, Discovery plans to air a special featuring him and Parker on Mar. 18 at 9PM. They will also air a memorial car ahead of the 2 hour Gold Rush special. We will definitely miss the spunky patriarch, but we’re so glad he was a part of our lives for so many years.
