A LOT has changed for Zayn Malik in the last year, and even though I was originally devastated that he decided to quit One Direction, he’s officially proven to me that it was the right decision. I’ve been obsessed with all his new songs so far, but ‘BeFour’ is the icing on the cake — Zayn is 100% better off as a solo artist.
It took Zayn Malik less than a year to start putting out new music after leaving One Direction, but even in such a short period of time, he’s given us stuff that’s SO great. Now that he’s finally able to do what he wants musically, Zayn’s voice is more refined than ever, and with the release of his new song “BeFoUr,” I’m officially over the devastation of the 23-year-old quitting 1D. Here’s why!
Just like thousands of other Directioners, I was totally upset/pissed off/angry/confused etc. when Zayn announced he’d be leaving the group on March 25, 2015. When he announced he was putting out solo music, I figured I’d give it a listen, expecting to be more annoyed than impressed, but “Pillowtalk” totally blew me away. I literally listened on repeat for days, and I immediately fell in love with “It’s You” and “Like I Would” when they dropped in the upcoming weeks.
Still, it was hard to get over the fact that Zayn just left the 1D boys high-and-dry, and I couldn’t bring myself to fully get past all the negative things he said about being in the band during interviews. But, somehow, when he put it into lyrical form in “BeFoUr,” I finally understood.
Although he hasn’t confirmed the track is about One Direction, it’s pretty hard to ignore the lines like “No strings for you to pull on,” when he’s continuously said he basically felt like a robot being told what to do while he was in the band. Zayn’s also hinted at awkwardness between him and the other guys, so when he sings, “Say what you wanna say, what you want, shame is you won’t say that to my face,” it’s pretty clear he’s referring to that drama.
It’s just so obvious now that Zayn was NOT happy in One Direction, and it simply wouldn’t have been healthy for him to stay in the group. The guys did great without him — Made In The A.M. might be my fave album of theirs yet — and Zayn is thriving on his own. It was a hard pill to swallow at first, but it’s definitely obvious that this was the right move. We can’t wait to hear the full album on March 25!
Do you agree with me that leaving 1D was the best decision for Zayn, HollywoodLifers? What do you think of his new music?
