What a tragedy! Rod Durham, who inspired millions during his stint on ABC reality show ‘Extreme Weight Loss’, died on Mar. 13. The contestant was only 52 years old, and appeared on the show just two years ago. We have all of the heartbreaking details, right here.
This is absolutely devastating. Fans of Extreme Weight Loss on ABC can’t forget Rod Durham, a big personality and beloved contestant. Unfortunately, Rod passed away on Mar. 13 as the result of an apparent diabetic shock. He was just 52 years old when he died. Here’s what we know so far.
This is seriously so sad. Rod, who is a high school English teacher, was spending spring break in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Unfortunately, his vacation ended in tragedy on Mar. 13. The beloved contestant on Extreme Weight Loss was found dead by a housekeeper. He apparently died from going into diabetic shock.
The most tragic part is that it seems to have been complications caused by his weight that took his life, but he had worked so hard to get his health back. In 2014, the show followed him for a year while he exercised and learned how to eat right. Rod inspired thousands by losing 180 pounds on the show. He entered the competition weighing 450 pounds and struggling with his health, but his impressive progress was amazing.
The openly gay contestant inspired not just viewers, but his students as well. “He had a personality and a character that was more than teaching drama or English in the classroom,” said his school’s newspaper. “Students could have a personal and professional relationship with him about life and being a good person.”
His fellow teacher Rocky Hanna said “There are a lot of broken hearts in our community today. People like Rod Durham come around once in a lifetime. His smile, his heart, his demeanor… Even if you were having a bad day, being around (him) would make it better. His laugh was infectious. He was literally larger than life.” Our hearts go out to his friends, family and community.
