This is so sad — pop singer Halsey revealed in a new interview that after being diagnosed with bipolar disorder at the age of 17, she tried to kill herself.
Halsey, 21, has a hot electropop album out and a friendship with Justin Bieber, 22, but she hasn’t always been on top of the world. In an cover story with Billboard magazine, Halsey admitted that she suffers from mental health issues and even tried to commit suicide when she was 17. Read the heartbreaking interview here.
Halsey looks super glam on the cover of Billboard‘s latest issue, but Halsey struggled in high school, like many of us do. When she was a 17-year-old senior in high school, she attempted suicide once she was told she has bipolar disorder. “I had tried to kill myself. I was an adolescent; I didn’t know what I was doing. Because I was 17, I was still in a children’s ward. Which was terrifying. I was in there with 9-year-olds who had tried to kill themselves,” Halsey confessed to the magazine. She hated her high school, which was obsessed with football and bullied her for “her tattoos and half-shaved head”.

There is a silver lining: once Halsey was discharged from the hospital after a few weeks, one moment changed her life forever in a positive way: “The day I got out of the hospital I was in the car and I was listening to Imagine Dragons,” Halsey shared. “It was a f*ck*ng moment for me. I don’t think I realized how important music was to me before that.” Hearing the band made her determined to find her own success in music — how inspiring is that?
