Shocking! Chumlee from ‘Pawn Stars’ was arrested in Las Vegas March 9, after a raid on his home found guns and drugs. Not only that, he’s under investigation for a sexual assault. This isn’t the Chumlee we’ve come to know from the show!
So unbelievable! Chumlee, real name Austin Russell, is sitting a Clark County, Nev. jail after Las Vegas Metropolitan Police found several guns, methamphetamine and marijuana inside his house while serving a search warrant related to a sexual assault case. The 33-year-old is looking at possible jail time, and it’s such a shock as he’s such a good-hearted, funny, easygoing guy on the show. Check out his best moments on the show. Let’s get to know a little more about the person that Chumlee is.
1. Austin got the nickname “Chumlee” as a kid and it stuck for the rest of his life.
When he was around 12-years-old, the father of one of Austin’s friends said his wide face and chin made him look like the walrus named Chumley on the Tennessee Tuxedo cartoons. The nickname stayed with him ever since.
2. Chumlee was already working at The World Famous Gold & Silver Pawn Shop before ‘Pawn Stars” was ever a TV show.
He practically grew up at the store as he’s been friends since childhood with Corey “Big Hoss” Harrison, whose father and grandfather own the business. He started working there full time when he was 21. He also has a hot Vegas girlfriend, by the way.
3. Chumlee is an avid shoe collector.
He is well known to fans for his crazy sneaker collection, which fills up several rooms of his Las Vegas house. It’s been profiled numerous times for it’s extensive selection and years worth of hard to find sneaks. He occasionally sells some of the sneaks in E-bay auctions. He’s also the chief appraiser when it comes to sneakers on Pawn Stars.
4. Chumlee is reportedly rich! His net worth is estimated to be around $5 million.
He’s been taking home $25K per episode since Pawn Stars debuted in 2009, but he’s also been smart about his image. After he became a fan favorite, he formed his own company selling novelty items such as T-shirts which he designed himself. In 2010, he sold half his stake in company to his boss Rick Harrison for more efficient merchandising. Not to mention his sneaker sales that we told you about.
5. Chulmee is a kid at heart.
He loves pinball games, video games and circus paraphernalia. All of which are fun to play with, but don’t always make for good purchases at the pawn shop.
