We’ll definitely be missing both Julianne and Derek Hough this season of ‘Dancing with the Stars,’ as they’re both taking some time to themselves this year. However, the crew on the show is actually pretty happy he’s off — and the reason may surprise you.
Derek Hough, 30, is hanging up his dancing shoes after six wins and 16 seasons of Dancing with the Stars. So this year, another front runner will shine, and HollywoodLife.com has learned exclusively that the creators of ABC’s reality series are actually thrilled since it will make this season “more of an unknown.”
“Everyone loves Derek, but everyone also knows he is the favorite every year and gets votes just because of that fact,” an insider told HollywoodLife.com exclusively. “This year without him is getting the producers excited as they know the votes will be spread around and make the show more of an unknown. They love that the discussion will be on multiple stars instead of who Derek is dancing with!”
It is true — Derek, who won last season with Bindi Irwin, always gets paired with someone who ends up doing really well. He’s just so talented as a dancer and a teacher. However, he’s decided to focus solely on his upcoming Broadway production of Singing in the Rain — and we know that will be a ton of work.
We’ll also be missing his sister. Julianne Hough, who danced on the show for five seasons and took Len Goodman‘s spot at the judges’ table last season, will be focusing on other projects. Len is also returning, which we’re of course, very excited for.
The full cast of season 22 of DWTS will be announced on March 8 on Good Morning America, but we can tell you a few people who have already signed on: Fuller House‘s Jodie Sweetin, GMA‘s Ginger Zee, NFL star Antonio Brown and The O.C. star, Mischa Barton.
