As Joey Feek continues her heartbreaking battle with cancer, those in her hometown, including her former high school coach, are rallying behind the country singer with a sweet tribute, remembering her as a ‘tremendous talent’ and a great ‘leader.’ So sweet!
Country star Joey Feek, 40, has courageously fought on as her terminal cancer continues to ravage her body. Now, with just days left to live, those in her hometown are reaching out and paying tribute to the country singer, remembering her as more than just a gifted singer. In a recent interview, Joey’s high school basketball coach revealed that from the start, there had been something special about the country star, describing her as both a “tremendous talent” and “a leader.” See the touching tribute below.
As Joey continues to say her final goodbyes to her friends and family, those in her hometown of Alexandria, Indiana are remembering her as more than just a country superstar. Among those leading the charge is Jon Howell, Joey’s former high school basketball coach, who recently revealed to WISH-TV the positive effect she had on those around her, referring to her as both a hard worker and a leader. “She didn’t just sing, she was pure country even as a young child,” Coach Howell recalled. “She was a tremendous talent from the start.”
Since learning about the extent of Joey’s cancer battle, Coach Howell told the outlet that he had tapped a photo of the country singer to his office door, along with the empowering message: “Find someone strong, confident, intelligent, faithful, and learn.” Though the school’s current students may never get the chance to see Joey walk down the halls of Alexandria-Monroe High School, where she is proudly captured in photographs lining the walls in her Tigers jersey, Coach Howell is hoping that the photo will serve as a sweet reminder. “It’s all about people paying attention to her life and how she’s chosen to live it at the end,” he added.
As HollywoodLife.com previously reported, Joey has been battling with terminal cervical cancer for months now, and according to her loving husband, Rory, 49, has now just days left to live. “My wife has been asleep for days now and her body is shutting down quickly,” he wrote in a recent blog post. “The hospice nurse came again this morning and said Joey will most likely only be with us for a few more days…at the most.” How devastating!
“A few more days…In the 40 short years that Joey has lived, my bride has accomplished many great things…she’s lived a very full life,” he added. “But even more than that, she has loved those around her greatly and been loved greatly in return. I can honestly say that Joey’s isn’t just a life well-lived, it’s a life well-loved.”
Thankfully, Joey’s final days have been filled with nothing but love and support from her family and loved ones. After celebrating her daughter Indiana‘s second birthday and sweet Valentine’s Day celebration with her husband, Joey unfortunately had to do the unthinkable and kiss her daughter goodbye one last time, as she prepares for the end.
We can’t event begin to imagine the strength and courage that that must have taken. As always, our thoughts are with Rory and Joey during this heartbreaking time.
