Kelly Clarkson, 33, admits she was so “embarrassed” that she cried during her emotional performance on American Idol. The pregnant singer tells Ellen DeGeneres, 58, on the March 3 episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show that she was so upset that she couldn’t hold it together during her final appearance on the show! Poor Kelly!
It’s the performance everyone’s been talking about, and Ellen gets right to it when Kelly shows up on the show. She asks Kelly if she was surprised by her reaction to the incredible performance. “Yes. I came off almost in tears for a different reason because I was so embarrassed,” she says. “I was like, ‘Oh God, this is my final thing on Idol and I could not hold it together.’ I was almost losing it almost the entire song.”
Kelly’s raw performance of “Piece By Piece” on the Feb. 25 episode of American Idol left judge Keith Urban in tears. When Kelly walked off the stage, she admitted that her husband, Brandon Blackstock, told her not to be overwhelmed that cried on stage.
“I was proud of myself for making it as far as I did,” she continues. “My husband knows me well. I came off stage and he was like don’t ruin it. Don’t ruin the moment. Because I was like it was so embarrassing. I cried the whole time. I didn’t realize it was gonna be that bad. And we were rehearsing that day and I just couldn’t get through it. My one year old is running around the same hallway as I was at 19.”
After the performance, Kelly was “overwhelmed” by the response from fans. The song means a lot to Kelly, and it really digs deep into her relationship with her estranged father. Kelly reveals to Ellen how she came up with the idea to write “Piece By Piece.”
“The song is incredibly sad … It’s just incredibly… it’s sad, but hopeful.. cause a lot of us we didn’t have a bar to set as far as finding love and relationships,” Kelly says about the song. “Or friendships in any form. So my sister and I had a conversation. Afterwards, I ended up writing this song about how lucky we are because we both found incredible fathers and just lovers and men and just partners. I feel really lucky because I feel like a lot of girls with daddy issues don’t end up that way, we end up going the same.”
