It’s the hottest ticket in town and even Broadway star Richard H. Blake admits, it’s nearly impossible to get a seat to see ‘Hamilton’ at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in NYC.
Richard H. Blake is everywhere! You probably know him from his starring role as Tommy DeVito in Broadway’s Jersey Boys or the slew of other Broadway hits he’s starred in over the years. But even Richard, who is currently starring in the limited off-Broadway musical, A Bronx Tale: The Musical, can’t call in favors to see Hamilton!
“I just want to be in Hamilton so I can see it,” Richard laughs. “You can’t get a ticket!” It’s true, it’s one of the hottest tickets in town but let’s be honest, Richard is too busy to go see anything these days. The actor is currently starring in Robert De Niro and Jerry Zaks‘ A Bronx Tale: The Musical, at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey. The dreamy actor is playing Lorenzo Anello, formerly played by De Niro in the 1993 film. “To work with Robert is obviously a check on the bucket list,” Richard tells HollywoodLife.com. “I feel blessed. I’m fortunate because few are as up there as the living legend of Robert De Niro.”
The backdrop for the musical is the Bronx in the 1960s, somewhat similar to Richard’s longtime gig, Jersey Boys. So we thought it would be a piece of cake for Richard to agree to star in the limited engagement from Feb. 4 to March 6 but it turns out it’s not that easy. “In some ways [it’s easy] because you do sort of have that Italian American sort of vibe running through you that you have with Jersey Boys. It’s in the same time frame but the Jersey accent and Bronx accent are similar yet not the same. It’s like trying to do a Southern accent and a Bayou accent. In Jersey their R’s are harder, whereas New Yorkers don’t hit the R’s as hard.”
But Richard admits the role of Lorenzo is very special to him. “I play the good guy in this. For me, Sonny in A Bronx Tale would probably be closer to Tommy DeVito but it’s nice to go to the other end of the spectrum. It’s an honor to play this role.”
