Did Chris Rock really manage to sell more than $65K in cookies at the Oscars?! As much as Girl Scout cookies are loved by everyone, it seemed like a nearly impossible feat to sell that many in such a short amount of time. Find out the REAL number right here!
Chris Rock, 51, did a fantastic job hosting the 2016 Oscars, during which he decided to use his platform to help raise money for the Girl Scouts of the USA. After plugging his daughters’ troop to the crowd, Chris sold boxes of Girl Scout cookies to the likes of Kate Winslet and John Legend and later announced that the whopping sales total was $65,243! While the big reveal was exciting, it seemed just a bit unrealistic — so we got to the bottom of it!
Considering the cookies are only $5 per box, selling $65,000 worth means that 13 THOUSAND boxes were sold during the ceremony. Sure, the star-studded audience have plenty of money to blow on sweets, but that’s a LOT of cookies! In fact, a Girl Scout rep told TMZ that the number was quite exaggerated. Rather than 13,000, the Girl Scouts sold around 500 boxes to celebs. At $5 a pop, that totals only $2,500…just a little different from the massive $65,243 revealed on stage!
So the cookie selling wasn’t just a stint, but the total certainly was! But while the Girl Scouts really did benefit from the $2,500 in sales, Chris’ daughters didn’t. Lola and Zahra, who Chris mentioned was not there to sell the cookies with their fellow Girl Scouts, it actually wasn’t even their troop either! The money raised will be apparently going to a troop based in Inglewood, Calif., not Lola and Zahra’s New York-based troop. They probably didn’t think their dad’s cookie skit was very funny!

Although the number may not have been true, we will admit that the Girl Scout cookie portion was pretty funny. Christian Bale was caught nomming on some Thin Mints, and Kate couldn’t help squealing over the Tagalongs! If Chris returns to the Oscars stage next year — which wouldn’t be surprising after his hilarious hosting job — we wouldn’t doubt it if he were determined to actually sell $65,000 worth!
