Wow, things just got so awkward! Chris Rock brought Stacey Dash onstage during the 88th Academy Awards on Feb. 28 and joked that she should be the head of the ‘minority outreach program.’ This comes after her controversial comments about getting rid of Black History Month.
It had to be the most awkward moment of the entire Oscars night. Chris Rock was talking about how the Academy is “taking steps” to solve the “Oscars So White” controversy and he said they had found the perfect person to be the Director of the Minority Outreach Program … Stacey Dash! They were obviously making fun of the time she went on Fox & Friends and said there was no diversity issue at the Oscars and that they should actually get rid of things like Black History Month. But it went terribly, terribly, wrong.
“The Academy has taken steps to fix this problem,” Chris said about the “Oscars So White” controversy. “And that is why it’s my honor to introduce the new director of our minority outreach program. Please welcome Ms. Stacey Dash.” She walked out on stage and boldy said, “I cannot wait, to help my people out. Happy Black History Month, thank you.” Not one person laughed. In fact, it was absolutely cringeworthy. We felt so uncomfortable and clearly Chrissy Teigen and The Weeknd did too. But they were just some of the celebs who couldn’t stomach the awkward joke. Stacey tweeted immediately following the moment.

Stacey also wrote a blog post that went live the moment she took the stage and explained why she did it, “For example, I spoke out against Black History Month. ( Why should there be such a thing? Haven’t we had more than just one month’s worth of accomplishments? Here my thoughts HERE.) Plus, I spoke out against the #OscarsSoWhite controversy HERE. My take? We need to stop complaining about white people oppressing us, we shouldn’t boycott the Oscars, and we need to support Chris Rock the host. Which brings me to the joke. When they added ME to increase the diversity, I’m sure many black people rolled their eyes. I’m not “black enough,” they say. But guess what? I’ve heard that all my life. I would rather be a free thinking, black than a cookie cutter black who thinks – and votes – just like all my friends.”
Stacey Dash — Her Controversial Comment That Angered So Many
When Stacey appeared on Fox & Friends in January, she said she didn’t understand why so many people were outraged that no one of color was nominated for an Oscar in the main categories. “I think it’s ludicrous,” she said. “We have to make up our minds. Either we want to have segregation or integration, and if we don’t want segregation, then we have to get rid of channels like BET and the BET Awards and the Image Awards, where you’re only awarded if you’re black. If it were the other way around, we’d be up in arms. It’s a double standard. There shouldn’t be a black history month. We’re Americans, period.”
