Looks like we won’t be getting an epic “Not Impressed” meme out of McKayla Maroney, 20, at the Rio Olympics this summer. McKayla was training so hard for the 2016 Olympic Games that she became “unhealthy” and “depressed.” The Olympic gymnast may no longer be competing, but she’s not done with the sport for good.
McKayla announced she would be taking a break from elite gymnastics during an interview with Gymcastic. She had been training hard to make it to Rio, but she reached her breaking point.
“Since October of 2014, I would go back to the gym and then burn myself out for 3 months,” she said in the interview. “And I did that probably until a couple months ago. And I would go to doctor after doctor, and I got so many blood tests … I was so unhealthy and tired I couldn’t get out of bed. I got depressed.”
She said she would train for long hours and wasn’t eating. “Sometimes it’s the thing that you need to let go that’s really holding you back from being healthy,” she continued. “I’m just ready to put my worth and value into something else, and I’m ready to be excited about something else.”
McKayla was a part of the “Fierce Five” at the 2012 Summer Olympics. The team won a gold medal, and McKayla individually won silver for the vault event. While training, she had an epiphany and finally realized it was OK that she didn’t really want to compete at the 2016 Olympic Games.
“The reason why I wanted to go to this next Olympics – I finally figured it out,” she said.” I wanted to show people that when everyone else is up against them, they can get through the struggle and the pain and do it because they love something. One day I was sitting outside and I was like ‘Why am I doing this? Yeah it’s cool that I want to do it and help inspire people but I didn’t know how to be okay with not being a gymnast. I go to a Starbucks or Jamba Juice or anything and they’re like ‘Are you going to the next one?’ Until the other day, I was not OK with saying no and I had no choice in my mind with being something else.”
She’s not retiring from gymnastics, but she’s ready for the next phase of her life. She revealed she’s writing music and hitting the recording studio. You go, McKayla!
