Did Rihanna cancel her Grammy Awards appearance over bronchitis, a diva meltdown — or Kendrick Lamar? Once RiRi saw how epic Kendrick’s performance was going to be, a new report claims Rihanna felt she was just going to embarrass herself and so, she bailed!
The mystery of Rihanna, 28, and her disappearing Grammy Awards performance keeps getting stranger and stranger. While the “Work” singer says she was too sick to sing, reports claim she suffered a meltdown before the show. But was Kendrick Lamar, 28, the actual reason RiRi pulled out?
RiRi claimed bronchitis forced her to cancel her Grammys appearance, but Page Six reports it was more a case of stage fright and shame. “She felt like her performance couldn’t compare [to the other performers],” according to the source, “and she was trying to avoid the embarrassment because she he knew it wasn’t the right comeback performance. She said, ‘I’m not doing this.’”
Once RiRi saw Kendrick’s rehearsal for his jaw-dropping and controversial rendition of “The Blacker The Berry” and “Alright,” the sources say she realized her planned performance of “Kiss It Better” was a flop in the making. She wasn’t the only one, as an eyewitness tells Page Six that “It was underwhelming. [It] was like a throwback to an ’80s talk show. James Corden was going to introduce her, and she was supposed to walk over, talk to him, then gyrate on the [mic.]”
RiRi may have pulled from the show to save face, but another source tells Page Six that a doctor did visit Rihanna after rehearsals. “[A]fter the doctor talked to her and told her the diagnosis, she was forced to pull out.”
RiRi’s headache (and sore throat) didn’t end with the Grammys. On top of that awards show fiasco, Rihanna even postponed the first eight shows of her highly anticipated ANTI tour dates, citing “production delays.” With all these problems dragging RiRi down, her ex, Chris Brown, 26, was scared she was going to have a breakdown like Britney Spears, 34, did in 2007!
“The industry bulls*** has taken its toll on Rihanna and Chris doesn’t want her to fall off the deep end like he once did,” a source close to Breezy EXCLUSIVELY told HollywoodLife.com. “He knows a thing or two about pressure, extremely high expectations, as well as not being able to perform when you’re sick.” Plus, even Chris would think twice before trying to follow Kendrick after he literally left the Grammy stage in flames.
Do you think Rihanna pulled out of the Grammys after seeing Kendrick’s performance, HollywoodLifers?
