Danica Patrick didn’t win the Daytona 500 on Feb. 21, but after her horrifying wreck, she’s glad she was able to finish it at all! During the race, Danica’s car spun out and went airborne before crashing down — hard! Click to watch!
For one scary moment, Danica Patrick, 33, was no longer driving in the 2016 Daytona 500. Instead, she was going for her pilot’s license! A scary spin sent one of NASCAR’s most popular driver’s airborne and you better believe it was not a smooth landing!
There were only 20 laps left to go in the Feb. 21 running of the Great American race when Danica got caught up with Greg Biffle, 46, according to USA Today. Greg’s car clipped the rear of Danica, causing the No. 10 Chevrolet to skid down towards the infield.
While Danica didn’t hit anyone, she didn’t need to in order to do major damage to her car. As she hit the infield turf, Danica’s car left the ground, flying across the grass before coming down in a heavy crash! Her entire front was mangled, but she was okay. Despite reaching as high as 10th place, Danica finished the race in the 35th position.
“Honestly, a lot of things happen on the track very quickly, and you can’t necessarily remember the one little thing that happened that caused an incident,” Danica said after the wreck, according to ESPN. Danica didn’t seem to hold any bad blood with Greg. “It just seemed like I was headed down the track toward the inside, and it just spun,” she said. “So I don’t know if I came across [Greg’s car] or if he had a run and snuck it in.”
Unfortunately, this wasn’t Danica’s only crash at the Daytona 500. While driving in the 2014 running of the race, she and Aric Almirola crashed into each other. These two caused a chain-reaction that resulted in a huge wreck involving 13 cars! Thankfully, the 2016 crash wasn’t as severe.
It’s hard to believe that Danica’s wreck wasn’t the most spectacular moment of the race. That belongs to Denny Hamlin and Martin Truex Jr. had the closest finish in Daytona 500 history, as Denny won literally by inches! Amazing!
