Big Ang’s life was taken far too soon, and she suffered from a brutal battle of worsening Stage 4 lung cancer in the last few weeks of her life. Find out everything you need to know about the horrible disease that took her life right here.
Big Ang was diagnosed with Stage 4 brain and lung cancer in December, and lost her battle with the terrible disease just two months later on Feb. 18. We are so sad to hear about her tragic passing, and are shocked that this illness killed her so quickly, so we’ve rounded up what you need to know about the horrific disease of lung cancer right here.
1. There are three different types of lung cancer.
Non-SmallCell Lung cancer is the most common type, and about 85% of people who have the disease have this kind. Small Cell Lung Cancer affects about 10-15% of lung cancer sufferers and is known to spread quickly. Finally, there’s Lung Carcinoid Tumor, which affects fewer than 5% of people with the disease. The tumors in this type grow slowly and are not known to spread.
2. It’s the second most common cancer.
In men, prostate cancer is the most common, while for females it’s breast cancer. In 2016 alone, there have been nearly 225,000 new cases of lung cancer and more than 150,000 deaths from the disease. Sadly, it is easily the most common cause of cancer deaths — about 1 in 4 cancer deaths are from this type.
3. It mostly affects older people.
2/3 people diagnosed with lung cancer are 65 are only, and only 2% are younger than 45 when diagnosed.
4. Tobacco is the No. 1 cause of lung cancer.
People who don’t smoke can get lung cancer, but it is much more common in people who inhale tobacco. Tobacco smoke is made up of more than 7,000 chemicals, with 70 known to cause this terrible disease.
5. There are plenty of symptoms of lung cancer.
A worsening cough that does not go away, chest pain, hoarseness, weight loss and loss of appetite, coughing up blood, shortness of breath, feeling tired or weak and bronchitis or pneumonia that keep coming back are the main symptoms of lung cancer. However, most patients with lung cancer do not have any symptoms until the disease has spread too far to be cured.
