For someone who claims to be millions of dollars in debt, Kanye West sure didn’t think this one through! Rather than offering his album for sale, he only streamed it on Tidal, resulting in hundreds of thousands of illegal downloads when he could’ve made $10 million. Uh-oh!
Kanye West’s album has been downloaded illegally SO many times, that he’s lost millions of dollars off of it! Considering the rapper just recently revealed he’s $53 million in debt, that’s some money he really could’ve used, no?!
Yeezy dropped The Life of Pablo after his Saturday Night Live appearance on Feb. 13, and in just one day, it was illegally downloaded more than $500,000 times. Before deciding to release it on a whim like this, ‘Ye had planned to sell it for $20 a copy on his website, and if he did, he would’ve made $10 million!
But instead of offering the record for download on his website or on Tidal, it was only available to be streamed, and so Kanye didn’t get anywhere near the amount of money he could have. However, many fans had already pre-paid for the download, and Tidal promised that the full download would be coming — which the 38-year-old has contradicted on Twitter. “It will never be for sale,” he wrote. “You can only get it on Tidal.”
Over the weekend, Kanye went on a Twitter rant and claimed he was $53 million in debt. He has since backed up this statement, but his actions have proven otherwise: He’s been seen flying on a private plane and shopping at a very expensive jewelry store just this week. “He has several businesses and investments, from his clothing line to restaurants to music worth millions” an insider explained to HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY, adding that his claims were made as a way to promote his album. “Kanye is doing exactly what he set out to do — create tremendous buzz and interest in his business endeavors. He will make millions and millions more from all this attention.”
