Meghan Trainor, Courtney Barnett, James Bay, Sam Hunt and Tori Kelly were all up for Best New Artist this year at the Grammys, and that is QUITE the competition.
We’re so happy for Meghan Trainor. The Best New Artist award at the Grammys is one of the biggest of the night, and is a serious honor; past winners include Adele, Alicia Keys, and Mariah Carey — three serious power singers.
“I have to thank LA Reid for looking at me as an artist and not just a song writer,” she said on stage through a ton of tears. She cried through most of the speech so we pretty much couldn’t understand what she was saying, but she totally deserved it. Many were surprised that she still fell into the “New Artist” category because it seems like we’ve been dancing to “All About That Bass” for years. However, her album Title did actually drop last year!
They also cut to her dad in the audience crying which was seriously adorable.
Meghan of course has gone through a lot this past year; she actually was forced to cancel her M Train Tour for vocal chord surgery, but her voice is definitely still as powerful as ever. She was a part of one of the most epic performances of the night — a tribute to Lionel Ritchie. She rocked the stage alongside Demi Lovato, John Legend, and Tyrese. Are you happy Meghan won? Were you rooting for someone else? Let us know!
