Just hours after Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia was found dead at 79, on Feb. 13 Donald Trump said they should ‘delay, delay, delay’ President Obama nominating a successor.
Senior Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonin Scalia was found dead at the age of 79 and just hours after, the Republican Presidential Debate took place on Feb. 13 in South Carolina. Every single candidate said that President Barack Obama should absolutely not be allowed to appoint his successor!
“I’m sure President Obama will do it I hope our Senate will be able to do something about it,” Donald Trump said. “We could have Diana Sykes or Bill Prior, this is a tremendous blow to conservatism. I think he’s going to do it whether I’m okay with it or not. It’s up to Mitch McConnell if he’s going to do it … delay, delay, delay.”
“We wouldn’t have the divisions I have today,” John Kasich said. “It’s not even two minutes after … I just wish we hadn’t run so fast into politics. The country is so divided and now we will see another partisan fight taking place. I wish he wouldn’t nominate someone or someone who has unanimous approval that this could happen without … I would like the president to put the country first. I believe the president should not move forward and let the next president decide based a vote by the people.”
Ben Carson said: “The constitution doesn’t address this particular situation … We need to start thinking about the divisioness that’s going on in our country. I fully agree that we should not allow a judge to be appointed during his time.”
Sen. Rubio agreed: “I do not believe the President should appoint someone,” he said. “It reminds us how important this election is. We need to put people on the bench that understand the constitution is not a living and breathing document.”
Former Gov. Jeb Bush said: “The next person needs to appoint someone with a proven conservative record. Of course the President has every right to nominate a supreme court justice. But in return for that there should be a consensus orientation.”
Ted Cruz also said President Obama should not nominate a successor: “Justice Scalia was a legal giant … he changed the arch of American legal history. We are one justice away from a supreme court that will strike down every restriction on abortion. The senate needs to stand strong.”
