James Bay is blazing onto the music scene! The talented Grammy nominee for Best New Artist has us all wondering who he is and where he came from! Here are 5 things you should know about the amazing singer.
James Bay, 25, is one musician who is on his way to stardom! With his Best New Artist Grammy nomination and his performance at the awards show with fellow nominee Tori Kelly, 23, on Feb. 15, this hottie is bound to become a household name. Let’s get to know James a little better!
1. James was inspired by Eric Clapton.
The soulful singer was born in the small English town of Hitchin, Hertfordshire. When James was 11, he was inspired to play guitar after hearing fellow British artist Eric Clapton’s, 70, song “Layla.” James started using a guitar he found in the cupboard in his house! It was 7 years later when he moved to study music at Brighton Institute of Modern Music (BIMM), and that is where he gained a greater education from playing at local open mic nights.
2. He was discovered on YouTube!
After James decided to stop studying at BIMM, he soon caught the attention of a Republic Records A & R after a fan uploaded a video to Youtube of him performing at an open mic in London. Within just a week he was signed to the label! Talk about lucky!
3. He began recording music in 2013.
James released his first single “When We Were on Fire” in 2013. He then released his debut extended play The Dark of the Morning, that same year. James second EP, Let It Go was released almost a year later. That EP debuted in the Top 10 iTunes album chart and the lead single, “Let It Go,” peaked at number 10 in the UK charts. Wow, 2014 was a great year for James!
4. James played at the Burberry Fashion Show.
James performed live on the Burberry runway in Sept. 2014 and he also recorded a Burberry acoustic session for them. He even modeled for the brand the following year with Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, 28! No surprise there from this handsome artist.
5. He recorded his debut album in Nashville, Tennessee.
James first album Chao & the Calm was recorded at Blackbird Studios in Nashville, Tennessee with producer, Jacquire King, 49. The album peaked in the Top 15 on the Billboard 200 and helped him pick up his first three Grammy nominations, including Best New Artist, Best Rock Album and Best Rock Song for “Hold Back the River.” This album really gave James the recognition he needed!
