It has been a truly awful season for Chelsea, and with fourteen games left in the Premier League their chances of European qualification are slim. However, a win against rivals Manchester United will raise their fans’ spirits and give them an outside chance of putting together a late run to climb the table and restore some pride.
Chelsea is currently on a 7-game unbeaten streak, which includes wins away at Arsenal and Crystal Palace. But don’t be deceived, their home form has been patchy and they’ve labored to a 3-3 tie with Everton and a disappointing 2-2 tie with West Brom in recent games. So, the fact they are leaking goals will give Man United hope of coming away with the three points.
The Red Devils are a difficult team to predict. Last time out they thumped Stoke City 3-0, but in the previous home game they lost to lowly Southampton 1-0. Because of their patchy form, Manchester United’s die-hard fans are calling for the head of their beleaguered coach Louis Van Gaal. Could defeat here spell the end of his job? Possibly.
But, with Wayne Rooney in his first eleven he will have a forward capable of breaking down the most stubborn of defenses with a moment of brilliance. The England international has scored seven times in his last 7 games after going two months without a goal.
Trying to stop Rooney will be Chelsea captain John Terry, whose future for the blues is up in the air after the club told him he wasn’t going to be offered a new contract at the end of this season.
