Grease is the word! The star-studded live musical event of the season premieres tonight, January 31, and it’s going to be one raucous Rydell time! With Julianne Hough as Sandy, Aaron Tveit as Danny and Vanessa Hudgens as Rizzo, this whole production is bound for greatness even before the cast dances onscreen. Read on to find out what time Grease: Live premieres, and four other important things you should know about the night!
What Time Is Grease: Live on and how can we watch it?
Who’s excited? Grease: Live premieres tonight, January 31 at 7:00pm ET, and will run approximately three hours! You can watch via live stream! If you’d prefer to watch on TV, the live musical will be shown on your local Fox station. Set your DVRs for a little bit longer than three hours so you don’t miss a minute, just in case!
A team of Broadway vets and Tony winners are putting on the production
This show is in good hands. Director Thomas Kail also directed the incredible musical Hamilton! Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winner Tom Kitt (If/Then, Next to Normal) is music supervisor, Drama Desk Award winner David Korins (Misery, Hamilton) is production designer, and Tony Award winner William Ivey Long (Cinderella, On the Twentieth Century) served as costume designer. Zach Woodlee (Glee, Annie) choreographed.
This is the first live on-TV musical to use multiple set locations
While live TV productions like The Wiz! and Peter Pan were incredibly impressive, Grease: Live is doing something different: hustling the actors through sets in entirely different places across the WB lot. They’ll even be outside for the big carnival scene at the end! Fingers crossed for no rain!
This version of Grease is family-friendly
Yes, Rizzo’s pregnancy scare is still a story line in Grease: Live, but expect all the risqué language to be toned down a bit for the live show. “Greased Lightning” has swapped out some inappropriate phrases that you’ll have to look up for “dragon wagon” and “the chicks will scream.” Sandy no longer becomes a smoker, either!
Expect new musical numbers
Frenchy (Carly Rae Jepsen) is finally going to get her own song, written by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey, of If/Then! Marty (Keke Palmer) also gets a song, though it’s not a new creation; “Freddy My Love” was from the original Broadway production, but didn’t make it into the 1978 movie.
