One Direction fans were both heartbroken and outraged when Zayn Malik left the mega-successful band. But they have to forgive him now — his new single, ‘Pillowtalk’, is proof that he needed to go solo.
Zayn Malik, you have more than proven with “Pillowtalk” that you have the musical talent and singing chops to make it as a huge solo artist. The haunting romantic love song and sensual video featuring your real-life girlfriend, supermodel Gigi Hadid, are mesmerizing. There’s no question with this release, which immediately climbed to #1 on the iTunes singles chart, that you will successfully soar just like Justin Timberlake did when he left ‘NSync, and Beyonce once she departed Destiny’s Child.
I personally can’t stop listening to “Pillowtalk”, which is rich, layered and hummable. This is no jingly pop song. It’s a much more sophisticated creation that nevertheless is perfect for radio play. It’s now easy to pardon you, Zayn, for saying such seemingly insensitive things in interviews about how much you wanted to leave One Direction. “I think I always wanted to go from the first year, really,” the 23-year-old told Beats 1 Radio’s Zane Lowe. “I never really wanted to be there in the band. I just gave it a go because it was there at the time.”
Now, with “Pillowtalk”, you can really ‘hear’ Zayn’s words in a different way. It wasn’t that he was dissing his former bandmates; he was simply speaking the truth. Zayn always had his own distinct artistic vision for his work. He literally marched to his own unique beat and wanted to sing different tunes. “When I realized the direction we were going in, mind the pun, with the music, I instantly realized it wasn’t for me because I couldn’t put any input in,” he said. Is it really a bad thing to be honest? Zayn was honest. And it’s clear that leaving One Direction was so hard for him, personally (think of all the intense pressure to stay) that he’s even making a statement by releasing his first solo album on March 25 — the anniversary to the day of when he left 1D. The album, called Mind of Mine, is also a proclamation about taking that brave step of going out on his own.
Zayn’s fans are rightly blown away by his premiere solo endeavor. It was worth waiting for:
Zayn's voice was made for songs like #PillowTalk, Zayn leaving 1D was the smartest decision ever.

And you have to also give Zayn props for filming such a captivating video, shot by Bouha Kazmi, and of course featuring his new love, Gigi, 20. His lyrics, “I’d love to hold you close, tonight and always/I’d love to wake up next to you…Be in the bed all day, bed all day, bed all day…It’s our paradise and it’s our war zone,” feel so personal and heartfelt. Listen, it was traumatic when Zayn abruptly abandoned his One Direction bandmates and seemed to suddenly leave the group. But now that he’s released “Pillowtalk”, he has to be respected both as an artist and a young man, who had been yearning for years to express his inner voice.
He couldn’t keep it bottled up inside anymore. And we’re so glad that he didn’t. Congrats, Zayn, on “Pillowtalk”; can’t stop listening to it and can’t wait for Mind of Mine.
Do you love it as much as I do, Hollywoodlifers? Let me know.
