Who else has been having withdrawals from ‘The Vampire Diaries,’ while it’s been on hiatus? Luckily we live-blogged this week’s episode/Groundhog Day special.
The Vampire Diaries went right into the action when it returned — Damon (Ian Somerhalder) landed in his personal hell, where Henry (Evan Gamble) and Lily both were, and immediately, he picked up a letter from his brother. Of course.

Who else is already choking up? Damon woke up from his “personal hell,” on a pool table, I may add, with Bon (Kat Graham) standing over him after reviving him. She then told him that she used all her magic to pull Damon out — but left Stefan (Paul Wesley) in there. I mean obviously she chose Damon. Let’s also just talk quickly about two things — how good Matt as a police office is, and how adorable Caroline (Candice King) is when pregnant. And yes, she tried convincing Bonnie to try and save Stefan first.
JK guys — Damon didn’t actually wake up; through out the episode, we see him go back and forth between present day and past. During both he must let himself feel the suffering: when he sees his brother on fire, when he sees people dying, etc. But he doesn’t let the suffering set in, he continues to go back and forth, so Bonnie’s spell doesn’t work and Stefan, Caroline and Matt standby. (Of course Stefan let it set in because he’s Stefan.)
Is it just me, or is it Groundhog Day? After waking a dozen times, he decides to change it — he kills Henry and walks right to the house. This time, his mother answers — and sends him down to the basement to see Stefan. He’s there with Elena’s coffin, to try and show him he could still be a good person without Elena’s help. Stefan also made him realize the emotion he had been hiding: the love for his mother.
However, at the end of the episode, he told his dying mother that he hated her, but more than anything that he has lost her twice and this would be the third, without telling her what he never did: “I’m so sorry, give me a chance to make it right. Give me a chance to make you love me. OK?” And with that, she died — and he finally felt the pain. So with that, he woke up. He was so angry that he flipped out and begged everyone to send him back one more time; Stefan tried telling him that none of it was real, it was all just to get him into hi shell, but he didn’t want to hear it: he snapped hi neck, knocked out Matt, stabbed Caroline and suffocated Bonnie.
Way to go, Damon. Not to worry, he’ll bring them back next week when he attempts to get that hell out of his mind.
