Did Shock Top just win the award for ‘best Super Bowl’ commercial?! In its debut ad for the big game, the beer company casts comedian T.J. Miller to exchange heated insults with a sassy talking orange. It may sound dumb, but trust us, this is one verbal smackdown you don’t want to miss. See it here!
If you thought Kanye West and Wiz Khalifa‘s war of words was entertaining, just wait until you see what Shock Top has in store for you this Super Bowl Sunday! On Jan. 28, the Belgian beer company released an extended version of its first-ever Super Bowl commercial featuring comedian/actor T.J. Miller going toe-to-toe — or should we say, insult-to-insult — with the brand’s wise-cracking orange mascot in what can only be describe as a cut-throat verbal blowout for the ages. We’re not kidding. Watch it here!
Who knew oranges could be so sassy? In this extended version of the 30-second commercial — an extension of its “Live Life Unfiltered” campaign — that will air during the Super Bowl on Feb. 7, T.J. gets caught off guard when Shock Top’s sunglass-wearing mascot, Wedgehead, starts talking to him at a bar. Being as “bold” as he is though, it’s not long before the beer tap initiates an all out feud with the actor by telling him he looks like “an unemployed civil war general.” Ouch! Not willing to let the insult slide, T.J. fires back with a quip of his own, telling the orange slice (yes, we know how ridiculous this sounds), ” well, you look like you’ve recently been evicted from your parents’s orange crate.” Boom!
The feud of course, only continues to get more vicious from there, with Wedgehead telling the Silicon Valley star that it “looks like you’re on a cleanse that doesn’t work.” Although, if you ask us, his best insult by far is when he tells T.J. that “it looks like your pet turtle is the only one you can lean on for emotional support.” Seriously, celebrities take note: This is how you properly feud with another celeb.
Though the two patch things up by the commercial’s end, the witty fruit definitely packs a stronger punch than T.J. had expected, as he clearly strikes a nerve when he touches on what appears to be one of the actor’s favorite hobbies — magic. “You’re awfully sassy for someone without a torso,” T.J. adds.
Honestly, this might one of the funniest beer commercial we’ve seen in a while. Of course that’s not to say that it won’t have some competition in the category for ‘best Super Bowl’ commercial come Feb. 7. In the weeks leading up to the big game, we’ve already seen teasers for Bud Light’s ad starring the hilarious Amy Schumer and Seth Rogen, as well for Snicker’s “You’re Not You When You’re Hungry” campaign, which stars a ver hangry Marilyn Monroe (sort of). Needless to say, football won’t be the only thing we’ll be looking forward to come Super Bowl Sunday.
