With the auditions behind them, the ‘American Idol’ hopefuls find themselves facing a new challenge: Hollywood Week. Tonight, one very exuberant contestant’s dream is closer to coming true, and she hasn’t even graduated high school yet!
Hollywood Week on American Idol season 15 is off to a great start! In the Jan. 27 episode, judges Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr. turn up the pressure as they cut people left and right, and the tension between the Idol hopefuls is beyond high! Find out who nailed it, and who, well…failed it.
At the start of Hollywood Week, the contestants check each other out (“Everyone’s so pretty!” says Sonika Vaid) as they prepare to do whatever it takes to make it.
Early on, Jessica Cabral does a beautiful cover of “Photograph” by Ed Sheeran. “Knowing it was the last season, I knew I had to be a part of American Idol,” she explains. “I knew that I couldn’t just let it pass me by.” Her talent shines and the judges advance her to the next round. Sonika Vaid, 20, and La’Porsha Renae, 22, (who rocks amazing key-shaped earrings and has an adorable baby daughter) also make it through!
Then it’s time for some mass eliminations: though Melanie Tierce does a great job with Andra Day‘s “Rise Up”, she doesn’t make it, along with Melany Huber, a cancer survivor who has a great voice but just didn’t do a perfect job at Hollywood Week. Womp.
On Day 2, Jeneve Mitchell, 15, the teenager who lives “off the grid” on a ranch with no power in Colorado, does an awesome cover of Little Big Town‘s “Boondocks” and plays cello again. She makes it through, and boy, does she have style!
Remember Michelle Marie Lecza from the very first round of auditions — the 15-year-old from Florida who’s so obsessed with Idol that she can name every winner off the top of her head in order — ? Well, she slays a rendition of “Dibs” by Kelsea Ballerini and we’ve got to say that Michelle is just the cutest. “This is my moment to shine and show America what I can do,” Michelle says. Kyrsti Jewel, who performs on her 16th birthday, brings the soul and funk with Aretha Franklin‘s “Rock Steady”. The crowd loves it, but the judges don’t, and out of the pair, only Michelle makes it through. Aww, sorry, Kyrsti!
Time for a sad story: Trent Harmon learns he has mono from his doctor just minutes before performing — he’s told he needs to go home early and rest — yikes — but this is his shot! He powers through his performance of Sam Smith‘s “Lay Me Down”. Fortunately, it’s enough — and he makes it through! JLo pulls a sneaky move and has a row of people step forward, telling them that they’re going through…and so is the back row! We just about had a heart attack there.
