Oh no — the Naval Medical Center San Diego has reported an active shooter in one of its buildings on Jan. 26. People in the hospital are being advised to run, hide or fight if they come in contact with the shooter, and several buildings are on lockdown.
An active shooter has been confirmed at a Naval hospital in San Diego. The medical center confirmed the news on Facebook Jan. 26, advising all occupants to “run, hide and fight” as police try and track down the shooter.
UPDATE: After a sweep of the building, no evidence of a gunman or shots fired has been confirmed. “There have been no reported casualties at this time,” Deputy Director of Public Affairs for Navy Region Southwest said. “There is a secondary, more thorough floor by floor inspection taking place at this time. The medical facility remains on lockdown and a shelter in place order remains in effect.”
Eight clinics and nine primary care facilities are on lockdown as police are working to obtain more information. “An active shooter has just been reported in building #26 at Naval Medical Center San Diego,” the hospital wrote on its Facebook page. “All occupants are advised to run, hide or fight. All non-emergency response personnel are asked to stay away from the compound.” Click here to watch a live stream of the active shooting situation.
Three shots were fired in the building’s basement , and nearby schools have been placed on lockdown as the situation is assessed, according to CNN. There have been no injury reports and a shelter has been put in place, according to NBC Nightly News. A law enforcement official has also confirmed that the US Navy has “not requested outside assistance” with the incident, so although police received a phone call about the shooter, no officer has been sent to the scene, the New York Post reports. Still, patrol cars and a SWAT truck were seen racing toward the buildings in the early morning on Jan. 26.
The staff at NMCSD includes more than 6,500 military, civilian, contractor and volunteer personnel. There is also a childcare center at the facility that opens at 5:30 a.m., so it’s possible that there’s hundreds of children on the grounds.
