The people of San Diego are on edge, as there are reports of an shots being fired at a Naval Medical Center. Details about the situation are still developing, but SWAT officers have reported arrived on the scene to help out the rest of the authorities and any possible victims.
Eight clinics and nine primary care facilities are on lockdown, as police have reported “an active shooter…in building #26 at Naval Medical Center” on Jan. 26. The hospital updated the situation via its Facebook page, instructing “all occupants…to run, hide or fight.” Witnesses told KUSI they heard three shots fired just after 8 a.m. PST, and that the shooting possibly came from the building’s basement. Building 26 houses the Security Pass and Decal office and is mostly used as barracks, according to NBC 7 San Diego.
San Diego police spokesman Officer Travis Easter said his department had received a report of a shooter from officials at the medical center, according to the New York Post. However, Officer Easter assistance wasn’t requested and so no officer had been sent to the scene. Despite this, SWAT teams have reportedly arrived at the center, according to Media-Ite. The San Diego PD also said said that hospital officials reported shots fired. Exactly who is firing, how many potential gunmen are involved or if there are any casualties is unclear at the moment.
A worker at the childcare center at NMCSD told NBC 7 employees at the facility have undergone training in the case of an active shooter situation. The staffer said the childcare center opens daily at 5:30 a.m., and there may have been more than 200 children on site when the shooting began. Thankfully, the child care center said it was “secured,” via its Facebook page, according to CNN. “All children are accounted for and safe. The entire complex is secured.”
