Yet another indie drama is making its big Sundance Film Festival debut at this one features none other than movie tough guy Michael Shannon playing a man falling hard in love with a stranger in’Frank and Lola’! Aww, so nice to see him turn the tables from his usual villain roles!
This sounds interesting! Frank and Lola is a love story where Michael Shannon – who plays the title character – plays a Las Vegas chef and one night a woman (Lola) comes into this restaurant and they get to talking and fall super hard for each other, only for him to learn that she has quite a checkered past. “When I read the script I was really taken back by the romanticism of it. It just seemed like a unique opportunity for me.” After so many gritty roles, we bet it was a fun change for him to be in a love story!
“Everything that could have gone wrong when we were making it happened,” first-time writer/director Matt Ross explained, “and then when it came together, it came together in the best possible way.” As for what Michael came away with from the set? “I learned a lot about cooking, I never played a chef before! I learned a lot about omelettes,” he said with a laugh, explaining that with mutliple retakes of one scene he made over a dozen in one day.
