CNN is changing the game with its upcoming reality series United Shades Of America. The series will follow comedian W. Kamau Bell as he goes to places “either you don’t think he should go or that you wouldn’t expect him to go.” He’s breaking boundaries one city at a time. Check out the interview from Sundance now!
United Shades of America isn’t your normal travel documentary. The premise of the show is sending “a black guy to a place either you don’t think he should go or that you wouldn’t expect him to go,” W. Kamau Bell previewed at Sundance.
The first episode follows Kamau meeting a member of the Ku Klux Klan. Executive producer Jimmy Fox revealed that it was shocking to see Kamau and this KKK member having a casual conversation and actually sharing a few laughs!
“You actually forget for like little moments here and there that this is an African American man sitting in front of a guy with a hood on. They’re just talking about Skittles,” Jimmy said in the interview. “Humor is the best way to communicate any idea,” Kamau added.
When asked if there was any other places or issues he’d like to cover on the show, Kamau admitted he would like to go to Dearborn, Mich., one of the most Muslim cities in the country. He’d also love to talk to some Native Americans on the reservation and head to Fire Island to talk to drag queens.
