Following the conclusion of the NFC Championship game on Jan. 25, the Caroline Panthers were favored by 3.5 points over the AFC Champion, Denver Broncos. But the Super Bowl point spread has actual gone up in the past 24 hours!
Update: the current spread is 5.5!
The initial line was put out during the third quarter of the NFC Championship game, and favored Carolina by 5 1/2 points — but it was quickly bet down to four points. It is now set at 4.5. “We had 10 windows open and there was a flurry of activity at those betting windows,” Jay Kornegay of the Westgate Las Vegas Super Book said, according to Syracuse.com said. “All the early money was on Denver.”
“The public normally bets what they saw last and they liked what they saw in the Panthers,” he added. “I think the line will settle in at 4 and stay there until Super Bowl weekend.”
South Point’s Jimmy Vaccaro, who has been running sports books in Las Vegas since the 1970s, also added that people were “cashing with one hand and betting with the other.” He said that the line would most likely settle on four points, and that he expects this year will crush the record $119.4 million that was bet two years ago.
“I know today was the highest handle for a Sunday leading into the Super Bowl I’ve ever seen in my life,” he said.
