Grab your Pikachus and hold onto your Psyduck because Pokémon is turning 20-years-old in 2016. To celebrate this anniversary, Pokémon will show fans of the game some love with an inspirational Super Bowl ad. Gotta catch them all so click to watch!
In 1996, a little game about “pocket monsters” was released and twenty years later, Pokémon is celebrating its birthday in style! After two decades of Pikachu, Team Rocket and more, Pokémon will kick off its special year with a Super Bowl commercial!
The ad starts off in Rio de Janeiro. Crowds gather around something spectacular when there’s a flash of fire – is that a Charizard? Whatever it is, it inspires a young child to think, “I can do that.” That motivational message is repeated by a girl who becomes a chess champion, a football team prepping for a big game and, ultimately, a very familiar-looking trainer about to take on a Pokémon champion. A 30-second version of the spot, reportedly costing $5 million dollars, will appear during the third quarter of the Super Bowl on Feb. 7.
Besides seeing Gyarados, Lucario and Magneton, the commercial is filled with references to the game for fans to find. The slogan, “Like no one ever was,” in the football locker room comes from the cartoon’s theme song. Plus, two football players line up so their jersey numbers spell out “1996,” the year Pokémon was originally released in Japan. There were plenty more — did you catch them all?
“For 20 years, the Pokémon world has inspired fans to train hard and have fun,” J.C. Smith, senior director of Consumer Marketing at The Pokémon Company International, wrote in a press release. “This ad is reflective of that passion, and I can’t think of a bigger stage to share this story than the Super Bowl.” Will this be the best ad during this year’s game? Or has Amy Schumer, already won that title?
Since Super Bowl 50 will have the Denver Broncos face the Carolina Panthers, Pokémon fans may have to have to choose between their Ponytas and their Luxrays. If you have no idea what those things are, you’ll have a chance to catch up on the Poké-fever. The original games — Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow will be re-released on the Nintendo 3DS console on Feb. 27, according to Uproxx.
This Super Bowl ad is part of a yearlong celebration of Pokémon. Fans who want to learn about monthly Mythical Pokémon distributions, retail events, special products and the upcoming Pokémon Photo Booth app can visit Pokemon20.com.
