‘Saturday Night Live’ is no stranger to controversy, and on the Jan. 23 episode, the show poked fun at the all-white Oscar nominees in a satirical sketch! Watch it here.
In a hilarious Saturday Night Live sketch from the Jan. 23 episode, members of Hollywood got dressed up for the fake Screen Guild Awards, where a presenter (Cecily Strong) read off a list of nominees that were all white. Sound familiar?
“There were so many great performances this year, it’s a shame we couldn’t nominate more. But I think we can all agree that these are the best of the best,” she said before listing the nominees. She started her introductions with Taran Killam as a boxing coach in a Creed-type movie, but as the list went on, the roles of the white nominees became smaller and smaller. It’s as if they shouldn’t have been nominated at all.
For instance, Bobby Moynihan’s character, Alan Sickle, played the role of “White Man With Camera,” but he was nominated over a black actor with a much bigger part in the same fake movie. The video also showed the grinning nominees surrounded by their aggravated co-stars. It was hard to watch, given the current circumstances, but funny nonetheless.
As HollywoodLife.com previously reported, a lot of black actors like Will and Jada Pinkett Smith are boycotting this year’s Academy Awards due to the lack of diversity in the nominations. Thankfully, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is working on changes to make the “Oscars choices more diverse.”
