The first brutal blizzard of 2016 has claimed its first victims. At least eight have been reported dead on the morning of Jan. 23, as snow continues to fall in heavy packs throughout the east coast. HollywoodLife.com has your latest update on Winter Storm Jonas.
Snow began falling further south, in areas like Washington D.C. and Maryland, on Friday, but the brunt of the storm really hit throughout the night and into Saturday morning, where it’s continuing to come down heavy all over the east coast. So far, eight people are dead in storm-related fatalities, according to CNN. These deaths have, sadly, taken place in the southern states, North Carolina, Kentucky and Virginia, where residents are less equipped to deal with such major snowfall.
With 18-40 inches expected to fall in some areas, 11 states have already declared a State of Emergency. In Virginia alone, police responded to nearly 1,000 car accidents and almost 800 disabled vehicles! With high wind gusts expected to reach 55 mph, 160,000 people have already lost power, but that number could obviously climb as the day goes on.
Two major highways in Pennsylvania and Kentucky turned into parking lots, as the roads froze over and vehicles were left stranded for hours with nowhere to go. The blizzard is expected to continue throughout the day on Jan. 23, so conditions may get even worse as the snowfall increases. Our best advice for all our HollywoodLifers out there? STAY INSIDE!
