So cool! Director Nick Pesce and actress Kika Magalhaes sat down at the Sundance Film Festival to reveal the surprising inspiration behind their ‘unique’ and ‘odd’ film ‘The Eyes of My Mother.’ Find out what it is and more, right here!
Nick Pesce made his directorial feature debut with The Eyes of My Mother at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. On Jan. 22, he and actress Kika Magalhaes sat down to explain his inspiration behind the ‘odd’ new movie. Check it out, right here!
Nick has made tons of short films and music videos, but on Jan. 22 he brought his first feature film as a director to the Sundance Film Festival. It’s called The Eyes of My Mother, and it’s about a girl who faces a terrible tragedy as a child and loses her entire family, and is forced to raise herself in isolation – so sad! As Nick puts it, “it’s a story about a girl who’s lonely and is just trying to stop it.” Not to mention, it’s even more unusual because it’s in black and white.
So how did such an interesting film come about? Nick explains. “I had just worked on a music video with Kika and I asked her to come do a short with me, and we weren’t going to script it. “It was based on this like little spark of an idea I had and that was kind of the jumping off point for the movie.” Then Kika got her own ideas on how to build this unique character, explaining: “She’s just a girl who wants to be loved. She’s just like everyone else. But, unfortunately, she just had a trauma in her childhood that made her have this weird behavior and grow up in this very weird environment.”
Nick is clearly in love with his new film, and has a very interesting take on how he wants it to be received. “I want to just create a very unique and potentially very odd cinema experience for people,” said Nick. We can’t wait to experience it for ourselves!
